Recommended Books To Read
So, here is my list of recommended books to read which deals with diabetes and health. In contrast, the book list does not include fiction or other subjects not related to health. In fact, the books on this page are the ones I have read.
Up to the present time, the book reading list is a continuous work in progress. As soon as I read a book, it will be added. Above all, some of the authors have published many books and are on my to read list.
Bear with me and in the meantime check out some of the books. In general, you can get them at the library or click on my links from Amazon. As an illustration, there are many authors that talk about their books on YouTube, click on the videos for a quick preview.
In short, a review or YouTube video is not the same as reading a book. So to understand the authors message, better to read the book.

Coffee and Tea
Coffee in Health and Disease Prevention, Victor R. Preedy, Academic Press, November 17, 2014.
Cholesterol
Dr. Malcolm Kendrick says that there are too many studies and Cholesterol is another one. The cholesterol hypothesis is wrong. Once everyone believed this and then Big Pharma cut in and made drugs and the drugs killed more people than it cured. 60’s 70’s and 80’s was known as the BS period. Cholesterol does not cause heart disease, albeit the body does produce cholesterol and you can get an abundance from eggs. So what. We now have statins. WTF. Statins were discovered by accident…. Billions and billions of $ profit for Big Pharma. Sarcastic fun and a must read book.
Cortisol
Stress increases cortisol, lowering testosterone, increasing fatigue and body fat. A regular sleep cycle will improve cortisol management. A sleep cycle is 90 minutes so plan a set
number of cycles 6, 7.5, and 9 hours. Research shows that 20% protein, 50% carbohydrate and 30% fat is the best ratio for weight loss and weight maintenance. For other dieters adjust accordingly. A low carb diet would be 20, 20 and 60. If you are having problems with stress read this book.
Fasting
Do you want to be superhuman? You need to have the perfect amount of autophagy not too much and not too little. Too much fasting will disrupt the cycle. The video is perfect timing for the release of Siim Land’s book Metabolic Autophagy. He has a website and many YouTube videos. Fascinating book and a must read to take it to the next level.
This was the first book I read on my health journey from Brad Pilon he was ahead of most people health wise back in 2007 and says 1) Prolonged caloric restriction is the only proven nutritional method of weight loss and 2) Human beings (nutritionally speaking) can only be in one of the following states: fed or fasted. That’s it. In my opinion these are the only two facts that are undeniable. Everything else is open for debate. This is the problem with nutrition today – it’s made out to be so complicated and confusing that nobody knows what to believe. See this video in his talk with Heightened Living.
Eat Stop Eat Expanded Edition, Brad Pilon, Self-published, 2007.
Dr. Bernstein

A must read book. Five out of five stars.
Dr. Jason Fung
I used this book to guide me through my fasting state to lose weight. When I initially lost weight I did not consult my doctor and I experimented with different intermittent fasting strategies and diet. The book lists different plans of fasting 12, 16, 18, 24, 36 hours and so on. The plan is to fast for longer hours to lose more weight. When you do not eat you do not stimulate insulin and therefore you are not storing but burning. In fact you are burning fat, which is the goal of the plan. Fantastic read from one of my favorite authors. Five out of five stars.
The information is quite clear, a bad diet could make you insulin resistant for years until you are diagnosed with “FULL BLOWN TYPE 2 DIABETES”. There is an excellent diagram in this book that steps you through the metabolic phases of insulin resistance to type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Very easy to read and understand. A must read for everyone. Five out of five stars.
The Diabetes Code: Prevent and Reverse Type 2 Diabetes Naturally, Jason Fung, Greystone Books, 2018.
Dr. Jason Fung and Dr. James DiNicolantonio team up to bring you a new book, The Longevity Solution. They discuss fasting, longevity and the theory of aging. Once adult height is achieved growth stops, growth factors play a huge role in this. The nutrient sensors insulin, mTOR and AMPK are also intimately linked to growth. See the YouTube video of Jason Fung being interviewed by Dr. Joseph Mercola discussing the Longevity Solution.
The message in this book is obesity is closely related to insulin resistance which leads to other metabolic issues. Here is a fantastic review of this book by Georgia Ede https://www.diagnosisdiet.com/obesity-code/ Here is another review from a good friend Melanie https://healthyhappywomanafter40.com/cracking-the-obesity-code A must read book. He recommends on your next blood panel that you have trigylcerides, HDL, fasting insulin and fasting glucose along with the other tests. Then go to his calculator that calculates insulin resistance and heart disease risk. He has it covered. Catch the video of Insulin Resistance Idiocy of the Cure.
Exercise
Charlotte steps you through a process of when you have diabetes and sedentary to a get up and get moving so that you can get your body moving and blood circulating. I remember when I first was diagnosed with diabetes I too was engulfed with work and my diet was processed food and no exercise. The book slowly builds you up from walking for 5 minutes to go for an hour and then start doing other exercises to add to the mix. If you don’t like to exercise read this book, she will motivate you to start doing something.
When I was young, in my 20’s I used to do hundreds of push-ups and sit-ups a day. Fantastic cardio workout and keeps you slim. This book explains the proper way to do many push-ups. Great reference book. Today I can still do the push-ups but not as many.

He says there is something in the diet that is causing this. The cause of CHD is not fat and cholesterol but Insulin Resistance. Watch this short introduction to his book.
John Yudkin
John Yudkin went head to head with Ancel Keys back in the 60’s and 70’s but for some reason Ancel Keys came out on top and said fat was the culprit when in reality it was really sugar. This book by John Yudkin later went out of print back in 1987. The latest revised edition has a preface from Dr. Robert Lustig. Ancel Keys put out a bunch of baloney books that misled the public into believing that it was fat that caused heart disease and to this day the Standard America Diet or Western diet is still the recommended diet. The SAD has been revised a bit to make it a bit better. Bottom line is cut out sugar from your diet and you should be good. A must read book. Five out of five stars.

Henry Bieler was an overworked doctor who’s health broke down due to bad eating habits. He was always a curious man and investigated the chemistry of foods. He came to the conclusion that he must give up the use of drugs and henceforth rely solely on food as his medicine. It wasn’t long before he gave up drugs in treating his patients. At the time colleagues wondered what he was doing. He explained to his patients “Your pain, misery and illness results from your own dietary mistakes and drugs. You are suffering because you are filled with toxic wastes caused by your diet of poorly selected food filled with artificial flavorings, preservatives, synthetics, over-processed ingredients-too much stimulating food, too few natural vitamins from vegetables and fruits. ” Well said, as the title suggests Food is your Best Medicine. You must read this book. Five out of five stars.
Dr. Jeff Volek and Dr. Steve Phinney
Phinney and Volek discuss the human diet, and the role in health. Both of the books have excellent charts and tables illustrating Dietary Protein and Carbs by Diet Type, Ketone Zones and Steve’s coined term Keto-Adaption charts. There is a chapter devoted to Insulin resistance which is becoming a standard for prediabetics. Hard to lose weight when you are insulin resistant and consuming carbs. I will not give away the secret as you should read both of these books. Five out of five stars.
Here is a link to a YouTube video where Steve Phinney talks about both of the books – The Art and Science of Low Carb Living and Performance.
Dr. Joseph Kraft
Dr. Kraft was the father of the insulin assay and performed 14, 384 tests to determine diabetes. No one else has performed this many insulin assay tests. The pathologies of diabetes are not risk factors for diabetes, they are the clinical pathology of diabetes! If you have any of the pathologies of diabetes, you are diabetic irrespective of your glucose status! In other words his name for diabetes is “diabetes in situ”. Hyperinsulinemia equals insulin resistance they are not combatant but one in the same. In other words if you are insulin resistant you have diabetes. Another quote from Dr. Kraft was: Should everyone be tested? Absolutely not, only those concerned with their future! Five out of five stars. You have to read this book.
Diabetes Epidemic and You, Joseph R. Kraft, Trafford Publishing, 2008.

pimples. Neal Bernard links the scents of decomposing food, unwashed feet, B.O., and human waste to cheese. In 2013 the average American ate 33 lbs of cheese. 30 lbs of cheese equals over 55,000 calories added to a diet. Is it any wonder why people are gaining weight. Holy cow! Are you having problems losing weight? Is cheese addicting? Read the book.
Nina Teicholz
Where did the saturated fat hypothesis come from? Why is saturated fat and fat unhealthy for you? The first time it became official policy, an official dietary recommendation in 1961 the American Medical Association came out with the first dietary guidelines, the gold standard in the world of nutrition. The hypothesis was a diet low in fat, low in saturated fat to protect against heart disease. Ancel Keys was the man behind the idea, unfortunately he led the way in nutrition history. His theory was the diet heart hypothesis saturated fat-> cholesterol -> heart attack, developed in the 50’s. Guess what, even to this day has not been proven. He did the first ever study called the 7 country study which was based on the island of Crete. In the end Ancel Keys fudged data to fit the hypothesis of his study. Unfortunately it was the only study done with skewed, fudged data whatever you want to call it. To this day the belief is saturated fat causes cholesterol causes heart attacks. What a load of crap. We now know the real truth. Anyway, point of the book is don’t eat vegetable oil or margarine, eat healthy olive oil, butter, coconut oil, meat, and eggs instead. Great read. Five out of five stars. See the video that talks about her book.
